Blog 2- Fears and Hopes
With any new thing that hits the world, like new technologies, people have both hopes and fears. With e-mailing, instant messaging, and facebook people are able to be in contact with loved ones more, which obviously, make people happy and gives people hope in technology. Technology is being advanced every day and new CMCs are being developed. So much new technology is making people fearful that we are becoming too dependent on technology. I know that I am pretty dependent on my cell phone, laptop, and internet sites like facebook. I always need to have my phone with me in case I get a call or a text message. While I don’t see the problem with being dependent upon technology, some people think it’s dangerous. New technologies that are able to pinpoint where you are or sites where one may overshare about them selves scare some people because they believe this interferes with our privacy. People are also becoming worried that human to human reaction will soon be nonexistent. Adults were also becoming worried with the growing amount of porn on the internet and were/still are very worried about children and online predators. In cases like this, CMCs are able to help navigate us through these new technologies. Parents can set up security on their computers so they can protect their children. With every new product there are pros and cons but it’s how we handle them that really matters.

It's the privacy part I have a problem with but it's only lately that it seems to bother me. The more of how I hear about what Google and Facebook (and others, too) do with our information the more it bothers me. And most people don't understand the long term ramifications of companies buying and selling your personal information, the biggest being identity theft. It's not what you and I do on the internet, it what the nefarious people do.
ReplyDeleteI agree with pros and cons, but we must draw the limit at some point. New technology can be overbearing or hazardous to our health.
ReplyDeleteMeaning, texting on phones while driving or operating dangerous machinery, is dangerous.
People take advance technology for granting, and sometime can misuse it.
You are exactly right bringing up usage at the end of your post. It is interesting to evaluate the fears of the consumer and then decide who is to blame here. Is it the source? Is it the users? Can we blame technology? We have created a lot of this monster and now we are facing the challenges that come with the wealth of information.
ReplyDeleteI agree how we handel new technology is what matters. Because I live and breath my iPhone and it does EVERYTHING and I love it. But there are pros and cons in every new technology I just learn that when you get a twitter page and set it up from your phone it gives out your number. What?? Technology is dangerous.

The real question is, how do we fix the problem once it is here? If something is online, it stays there forever. You can't run away from it. You sure as heck can't just pretend it didn't happen. And we can't just "turn" the internet off.
