Com'on We all Do It...........Webspeak lol!
I must say technology is slowly taking over the world it is to the point where it is beoming controlling . In todays time if you don't have a cell phone you really don't exixts. We are living in a society where everything is becoming a number and, an alphbehet just look around you. Social sercurity numbers, a number in the church, and even a number to get school lunch, I guess it's safe to say we are living in a global communication as the authour, Crispin Thurlow would say. Webspeak has a big influence on our cultural because it's taking away of how proper English should be spoken the biggest problem is your nationality has nothing to do with it. It is more of an age group and digital technology everything is moving so fast. I always speak webspeak I mean I don't know a person who don't especially with all the social networks in the world I believe everyone has done before or at some point. My friends and I always websepak it's much easier and now I am to the point where I make my own short-hand abberviations, then I have to explain what it means lol. " Unique writting style provides oppertunity for creativity,"(Thurlow 3).I love this quote I feel like some time why can't short SMS just be a creative way of talking or sending mail, instead of making others feel like their trying to get a way from standard English, "text messages offten bear more resemblance to code than to standard language" (Thurlow 3). This is true after all we are living in different times!

Someone sounnds a lot like someone I know teaching another that that some of us are in... I kind of agree but at the same time I think that we are not controlled by these measures. If we were then why would the world be so crazy? Why are there so many murders? It's a way to keep track of people sure, but on the same note if you lose all of those numbers you become hidden even easier. It's a double edged sword really.

ReplyDeleteFor me it's like spoken or written language. Everyone learns to speak and write proper English in school. If you learn the proper way to speak and write a language and then decide to be creative and write poetry, that's great as long as the audience you're writing to is expecting and enjoys poetry. Songwriters, for example, for the most part write poems to music, but don't speak or write in poems as a matter of daily language use. The same would be true of SMS texting. If the person you're texting to knows you and is a friend and is expecting your style of texting, by all means use your own short hand abbreviations. Otherwise, if the text was work related or to someone who I don't have a personal relationship with, but for some reason texted me, I would use correct language.
Curiously, laughing out loud in Japanese is 大声で笑う, lol is 笑. I don't know if that is correct or not, that's what it shows in google translate. I wonder as to the amount of acronym use in other languages, more? Less? The same? Are they equivalent? Sounds like a possible thesis paper for a grad student.
ReplyDeleteIn my post i also brought up the fact that webspeak has a big influence on our cultural and the fact that it's taking away of how proper English should be spoken. Teachers don't want to read papers about Jane Eyre containing abbreviations and improper grammar and punctuation.
ReplyDeleteSoooooooo, true! We are neglecting proper English. Our children are becomming accustomed to using this short hand text messaging that allows them to fail in school. We can sometimes become crippled to this texting that we will get mixed up when it comes to the real world. Like they say, "practice makes perfect"! I believe we should stay focus on what is really correct.
ReplyDeleteYour post brings up questions such as where and how we should teach the differences of webspeak and grammar. At some point, educators must give some attention to the new found language and approach the concerns. Long gone are the days that webspeak can be passed off as something tweens do during instant messaging. As it creeps into schools ,there has to be a line drawn in the sand somewhere.
ReplyDeleteYou are all making good points here. I do think we need to be careful about making broad generalizations--is technology really *controlling* us; or do we allow it to manage our lives?
ReplyDeleteYes Mandy and Will I agree we are taking away from proper English and it's not only killing the younger society but the adults as well. Look at how many older people or on facebook and twitter.
