blog #13- The past always comes back to haunt you

As Dana Boyd discussed in the video the online environment is sort of the same as the offline environment in that it is a place for friends to come together and “hang out” in a sense. She also says that “kids” are using online networking sites primarily to interact with their friends whether they’re from the same school, different school, apart of after school activities, etc. A really good point is brought up in the video in that whatever is put online is basically going to be there forever. I remember when I was in highschool when facebook began to get really popular, a speaker came to talk to us about the dangers of what we post online and that pictures that get posted could stay on the internet forever and I have heard a couple of stories of how these pictures have come back from the past to bite people when they are looking for jobs. A new thing college kids are doing are changing their names on facebook when it’s time to apply to grad schools and look for jobs because they don’t want anything on their page to backfire on them and blow an opportunity. I have seen a couple of crazy name changes but mainly I’ve just seen people switching around their first, middle, and last name.

  1. Ha I never thought about it this way Mandy. May be because I don't have a Facebook page. The statement you made about people changing their names is true. On SNS sometime can be confusing because your friends would change their name every 6 seconds and their profile picture every second. Then they wonder why you deleted them. lol Maybe you forgot who they are?

  2. I agree about items being on facebook forever... I know so many friends that couldn't ever run for any kind of political office because if they wanted to be slandered all the media would have to do is add his facebook and scroll back a few years... Some people post the most crazy things...

  3. Thats pretty crazy about the name changes. If people were so afraid/shamed of life vs. the real world, you would think they would grow up way sooner than they day before graduation. What are
"they" saying now? Expect your grandkid's kids to see what you posted? Awesome :)

  4. I used to work at Shelby County Schools as the Network Administrator and one of the things we did was block access to MySpace. One, because students spent so much time on MySpace when they were suppose to be doing homework/school work and two, because of the all the personal info students put on their pages. There were many meetings with PTA's trying to get the word out not to let students put too much info on MySpace, or to avoid it all together.

  5. Smile. Facebook users changed names to hide from people they have lied to, or sleep with. I believe most people uses web page for quick sex hookups.
