After reading the two texts, I came away with both expressing the fact that people have hopes and fears when new technologies are introduced. Most people can see the benefits in new technologies and how it will help/improve peoples lives. A lot of people can also see where the new technologies can go awry. Take Google and Facebook for examples. Both provide a great service; Google helps you find things on the Internet and Facebook helps you find and stay in touch with friends and people who are otherwise hard to stay in touch with. But, for me, both abuse your privacy big time. Google with it's targeted ads based on your surfing habits is very annoying. Last year I went on a cruise. For months that’s all I saw were ads for cruises on sites I visited. I'd already made my cruise reservation, I didn't need to see ad after ad of cruise adverts. Eric Schmidt, (outgoing) CEO of Google said this about privacy: "if you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place". Maybe so, but a lot of people do things in private they later regret doing and don't want the whole world to know about it. that's why it was done in private. And Facebook, just TODAY said they would let advertisers use comments on your page without your permission when you "liked" their product. With no way to opt out. To me, that's taking privacy too far.
So people are right to see the good and bad in new technologies. Because new technologies will be used for good and bad.
Wow! facebook is going to let its advertisers do that now? I had no idea and now I really regret "liking" some products. I really like how you included the quote from Eric Schmidt. i know a story about a girl who got turned down for a job because someone searched for her on the internet and found some pretty incriminating photos that were posted during her party days. I just always think about people i wouldnt want to see whatever i post to steer me away from posting something that may come back to haunt me.
ReplyDeleteI agree! Face book is full of drama! People are arguing and sometimes threaten! Facebook have to much personal information posted. People can easily find our where you live and work. People lives are in danger and they don't even realize it! The Privacy is totally dismantle on that site.
ReplyDeleteI read this today on Facebook and it went along with what you are saying in your post. We want privacy but when we partake we end up paying a price. The New FB Privacy setting called "Instant Personalization" goes into effect. The new setting shares your data with non-FB sites & it is automatically set to "Enabled".Go to Account>Privacy Settings>Apps & Websites>Instant Personalization>edit settings & uncheck "Enable". BTW If your friends don't do this, they will be sharing info about you as well. Please copy and repost.
ReplyDeleteThis is so true especially about Facebook. I am something like a medium computer wiz and when I want nice pictures of my sister or brother I just get them off facebook. Because you can always copy and save their pictures, WOW some pravicy I think these social networks need to be a little more careful on how the pravicy policie works.
ReplyDeleteTrue the new technology is advancing not only our intelligence, but also our speed. Staying in tough with friends and family has never been so important due to facebook and other social networks. Sales have increased dramatically online, causing actual physical stores to suffer. Is this the downfall of our economy?
