Good evening! Though I am late, I still wish to participate!
I was categorized also as a digital collaborator. I assume this means there is a smidgen of "geek" in me. I do agree with this category assigned to my answers, however I believe that the quiz is missing at least two categories. The first one that came to mind was, if I can use them, I can build them. There is not such a category that suggests a type of hardware engineer in electronics. The second category I would suggest would be the level of digital dependence.
I have many electronic devices: cell phone, Ipod MP3, digi camera, PSP, NDS, other game consoles, 1 desktop, 2 laptops, 1 net book. All in all, I know how to use them, though I do not know how to build them!
I check my email at least once a day but only because I choose to pay extra on my cell phone plan to check it there as well. I do text message, picture message, and sometimes actually use the call options on my cellular device.
I believe that we are the digital age and that it has benefited us greatly with the new abilities offered within its services. However, I also believe it is hindering us greatly with the lack of personal contact with each other. I am concerned slightly that as the years pass, this need for personal contact will change, become a smaller need, and possibly be completely replaced with this "digital age".
So yes, I believe I am digitally competent and confident, but not dependent!
I think it is entertaining to be considered as part of the "mostly male" group of digital collaborators. I understand this number is caused by many things, but still non-the-less entertaining. The report given by Horrigan was extremely interesting to me in that I had to right a research paper last semester by these same guidelines. Fortunately, I did not have to do the survey work, so understanding this report as one I could have been interested in myself was attention grabbing. All of the numbers sort of flooded me with information, but seeing the graphs illustrate what was measured helped tremendously to my understanding.
All in all, my reflection on typology is correct in my perspective, and my reflection on Horrigan's report is that I am very interested to dig deeper into what else was uncovered out of the general population.
Thanks for reading!

Ha, I also have a lot of electronic devices! I have an iphone, ipod, shuffle, digital camera, flip video camera, wii, xbox, super nintendo, N64, laptop, and a netbook! It didnt really seem like i had this many electronic devices until I had to list them all, haha. I agree that i have the same fear that personal contact will go out the window. Sometimes I don't even have the need to talk to my friends on the phone anymore especially now that facebook has created facebook chat. Texting is also an issue too. I admit that i prefer to just text people instead of talking to them on the phone.
ReplyDeleteI, too am a Digital Collaborator, but I'm not a guy either. It's important to remember that research reports aggregates, so even though the group is more male than female, ti doesn't mean there are no women at all who are digital collaborators.
ReplyDeleteHey Lauren, I'll second your opinion on the fact that too much of this digital interaction leads to too little personal contact. I remember seeing a movie where people were afraid of each other and avoided accidently contacting each other (like in an elevator), did everything electronically at home, including work. It was creepy and made you think about what might be in store for us in the long run. Not the kind of future I'd looking forward to.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the level of dependence would make a big change in the quiz. I think dependence level would dramatically alter the results in the quiz and make them more specific to levels of the user.
ReplyDeleteIf there was a dependence variable attached to the quiz, I'm sure I wouldn't want to disclose my results since it's almost sad how much I depend on my digital devices for work, school and the majority of my leisure time. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and Niki that adding this factor could diversify the results even more. Could make the results more interesting as well, I'm sure!
Yes, personal contact has become a matter of convience. Emails, text and skype is taking away alot of the formal face to face meetings for business and personal
ReplyDeleteI am a DC too! I totally agree with you when you stated about dependence. I am a person that have all the new electroinc devices when they arrive however; I find myself sticking to my cell phone which does everything!I really can't stand to check email but it has become a part time job for me especially in school. When it comes to being creative I am the queen but still take the time out to see how other people feel about my ideal also.
