Sadly, but we are all guilty of web speaking every now and then, mostly now. It is the quickest way to type and go to the next task on your list. Funny thing, but most people are very familiar with web speaking and enjoy doing it. I find myself reading from the internet where people use it frequently and laugh. People enjoy the fast past of typing gestures and webbing that they don't care what people say or think.
I do believe that we can get by with it, due to the fact that everybody today, don't have time to really communicate or collaborate on things. So, they speak while in traffic and anything sudden to come out.
We all are guilty of it, and think it's holarious once we read the reply back. I general didn't like it at first, but I found out that it is the easiest way to communicate, while the pace is fast.
For me it takes too much effort to try and figure out what the acronyms mean. For the longest time I couldn't remember what bff meant, specifically what the last f stood for. Now, here comes a movie that changes it all up, Best Frenemy Forever. So are you bff's with someone, or bff's? Without some context, who's to know?
ReplyDeleteI usually know what a lot of acronyms stand for since i was basically raised using computers and the internet but there are a lot of new ones coming out that i am clueless about. I got a text message a couple of days ago from a friend that had an acronym in it (cant remember it for the life of me) but i sat for a couple of minutes trying to decipher what it meant until i caved in and asked. I hope bff stays as best friend forever i dont want it to change to best frenemy forever!
ReplyDeleteContext...such a good word to use when talking about webspeak. I think that context is crucial when writing in that form. It surrounds conversation that allows tone to kick in with the context. It also, if used in the wrong context, confuses the not-so-savy webspeak reader.
ReplyDeleteDan makes a good point--actually, I though of everyone this weekend. I was in the airport and at the checkout counter at the newsstand was a notepad, and on the cover it said it was a "Dictionary of Web Acronyms"! I'm not really sure who the target audience was for this product, though!
ReplyDeleteOMG when people come out with their own acronyms it makes sick because I don't know what it means. lol Then when I ask they'll say something like, "Get ya text game up!" It's funny to webspeck because seem like everyday a new word is made.
ReplyDeleteWebspeak is great because it brings people together... It can be in a good way... It can be in a bad way... Wow... just go to youtube and look up anything political.. Great Googly Moogly some people go nuts...
ReplyDeleteWhizzle Izzle...
