Blog 8

In chapter 5, Baym talks about how questions are raised about whether people are honest about themselves online and whether they can be trusted. It is very easy to fool someone online and go by a different identity. She also says that “in many online environments, people seek to individualize themselves as different from other people”. The blog I’m following is a perfect example of someone using the internet to express themselves and individualize themselves. I’m following the blog of Tavi Gevinson, also known as the “style rookie”. Tavi, who started blogging at age 11, is only 14 years old and has gained fame and attention from publications ranging from the New York Times to Vogue. She frequently describes herself as an “outsider” and has been using her blog to express her individuality and share her ideas with the world.

  1. Very interesting blogger choice... Do you think that they are really a 14 yr old? I am now so curious to know if half of our blogger choices are legit.

  3. I looked at your blog. It is so interesting. I love that quirky girl and she is smart for age! I had this thought...Does it make a difference if she is really 14 or not? Do we really need to know the truth? Do we care if our blogger is a liar?
I think yes. I think it all matters and loved that you can confirm (because of media attention ect...) that she is, in fact, who she says she is. I think this makes her much more intresting to read. However, I think some readers don't really care what is on the other side of the monitor as long as their time spent reading the material is enjoyable.

  4. I must say it doesn't surprise me that she's 14...kids now are "interesting" not just "interested".

I also check things out, but I always happy when things are as they seem.

  5. Good pick! I know this is going to be intresting. People always cover-up who they are to be who they really want to be!

  6. Where else could 14 year old "fashionista" get a following like she has on the internet? Her family? Her friends? Her extended family and friends? Probably not. Her family and friends probably did not take as big of an interest in her interest of fashion until she got a huge following on the internet. That's the beauty of the internet, you can reach out to others with your interests and your success is not limited to those you meet in person.

  7. Her parents didn't even know she had such a popular blog until she asked them if it was ok for her to be in the new york times!

  8. I think what makes this blog so interesting is the fact that yes it is a 14 year old, Following the life of someone you wish you could be is more common today than anyone can see. Take sports figures for example... They have 10s of 1000s of followers on twitter, of people who envy them and want to emulate them. So when they get any schred of information that they feel comes directly from them, even if it isn't, it gives them some sort of a connection with a figure that would otherwise be off limits. It's kinda like a person who claims to talk to dead people, when in all reality, the odds are they aren't talking to anyone but using random thoughts to find enough insight into someone's life to be able to quote a dead person to make the end user feel comfort or a connection to something that isn't really there. Who is to say this is a bad thing? Even if it's proven to be fake, it can make someone who is morning feel better. It's like saying "Willy Wonka" isn't real but the idea of Willy Wonka has effected more people's lives than any "Single" normal person, for this example I will use myself, has so who's to say it's not real? Can't just the thought or understanding or for lack of a better term "Faith" in something make it real to that person?
