An online community has a common interest that they share and communicate; Baym references Ferdinand Tonnies, as defining community as having an essential condition that individuals share which then cause them to develop a close social bond. The main fuction people can enter into this virtual arena for discussion with others or to just vent in some cases. The shared issue or condition is what brings them together. Some friends of mine, that I have joined different communities, talk about the support that they receive in some of their everyday challenges, because of the seemingly pure relationships they have formed. Also, they have never met. Now on the other hand the SNS, give individuals, one person a platform to say how thet are feeling and the option for others to join in to comment. Also, sometimes you can't really tell how close people are on SNS, one thread can be the link that can possible bring them together, but that's only if the information is disclosed in their profile.

  1. I agree common interest does grow people with similar values closer together. Sometimes it is scary with your likes and dislikes are so familiar to one another.

  2. I think I haven't joined any of the groups online because I am a cynic...can people really be their true selves? Maybe so, but I always feel like the background information or comments or unintented information is what really tells the most about people.

  3. To me, that is why SNS are shallow attempts at keeping up with others who you normally wouldn't keep up with. At first i felt obligated to comment on everyone's wall who wanted to be friends, then things got out of hand with everyone you once knew finding you on Facebook and wanting to be friends, it seems like I was spending way too much time trying to find different ways of saying "Hi, hows are you? We haven't talked or seen each other in years or decades, hows things going?" I'm guess I'm not that sociable.

  4. I agree Tonya, Twitter has a lot of SNS. Everyone just throw their thoughts and feeling on the profile. We all comment doesn't matter if we know them or not. The great thing about Twitter is people comment in matter of seconds. The Twitter community constantly grows due to one posting on their profile every second.
