Blizzle Eizzle On St. Pizzle Dizzle...

The readings were very interesting as I have played several games similar to MUDs when Iwas younger. Nothing recent like FFX or anything like that but I used to dabble a little when I was 10-14. The Turkle reading was very interesting, I found myself agreeing with a lot of things that were mentioned such as finding the MUDs to be more realistic than "Real Life" or even asking people on the games how things were going in "real life". You come to find that games can lead to real friends even if you never get a chance to meet them in person. The story of Julee was more disturbing that people play games face to face where they act out events, I found that to be a little strange. The best part about MUD games is that if you don't like how your character is, all you have to do is create another one, or delete the old one. In some cases creating a password with your forehead is a suitable way to keep yourself offline. The stories of addiction to these types of games and lifestyle changes is VERY real. I know several people who have been so involved in games of this sort that they have lost friends, relationships, jobs, and some to the extent that they lost their health (Gaining over 100 lbs.) Baym Bring up great points in the identity section about how she has separate identities for each section of herself on the Internet. Like for example if my blog had all my personal information and my political views, that would be separate form my facebook persona of a crazy weekend worrior who loves to party. Where some people hide who they are and give lies about age, gender and location. Baym explains that though this is possible it is rare that people lie like that. This was shocking to me as 99% of the information I put on the Internet is BS... Maybe thats because I have seen what can happen to people who don't.

  1. I agree, surfing the internet has precautions on every angle. The problem todya is that people trust to easy on the internet. People allow themselves to be victims of deception. Therefore, we must handle everybody on the internet as if they are the plaque!

  2. I'm interested to know what you think about this quote from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg:
"You have one identity. The days of you having a different image for your work friends or co-workers and for the other people you know are probably coming to an end pretty quickly … Having two identities for yourself is an example of a lack of integrity.“

Do you think you lack integrity by keeping parts of your life separate?

  3. I definitely gathered that too D-Whizzle. And ha! to the forehead password.(I have so done that). I try to stay off profile revealing websites as much as possible. I don't think I have updated in two years to myspace, and atleast 2 months on facebook. Maybe I should delete. As for Mark Zuckerberg....integrity on the internet? Who is he to speak of internet integrity?

  5. I think Mark Zuckerburg talking about integrity is pretty funny. I think protecting yourself on the internet is important. I also think not telling everything about where you live and when you are going out of town are smart ways to not get yourself in trouble. On the contrary, putting made up stories about yourself and "bs" every time you get on the internet is basically what has the "real connections" in a bind when it comes to connecting online. How then can anyone be trusted?

I do think this can go both ways... I think it can create a lack of integrity by making an aspect of yourself that is not fully true but in the same fashion that is also a part of who you are... In some circles who I want myself to be can be a subject of a negative aspect of what I am, where in the circle it's acceptable who you are. For example, if I was on a car forum for say for the sake of the statement a "Chevy" forum, I could be seen by an import car owner as a "silly redneck that drives gas guzzeling cars that perform great but are not eco freindly" well in that circle I don't want to be eco friendly... Where as another forum about the BP oil spill I have a completly different opinion on the subject alltogether... Does this make sense? So I don't think it can say I "LACK" anything but it makes it where I can be who I want to be for that specific topic. Confusing but... Thats the internet baby... :)

  7. I thought the part about "identities for each section of herself on the Internet" was a great idea, but isn't that sort of like multiply personalities?

    Who am I talking to?
    Jane.
Hi Jane, is Sally in there?
No, but Suzy is. Do you want to talk to her?
    Sure...Hi Suzy.
Ah, Suzy doesn't want to talk to you, but Sara will.
    Who's Sara?

I think what Mark is trying to say is... We all have integrity, the way we choose to show it is our own CHOICE... He doesn't choose to have us on Facebook... WE do this ourselves... This is why... If you Google DAvid White Memphis Tn ... You get nothing on me... I have not a SINGLE email or site that has 100% my real information... Even my facebook profile is hidden with a lot of false names and information, and can only be seen by who I choose to see it... Now Mark sees it all true... but in that same realm of thinking... If Mark can see it... ANYONE with his technical know how can see it... so because he is put in the limelight for an amazing idea doesn't mean that there weren't millions before him that knew how to access the same information they just didn't put it all together and come up with something as powerful as facebook... So I think in the grand scheme of things if there was a single person who could speak of internet integrity... Mark could easily be consitered one of the most knowledgeable, not only as the hero... but in most cases the villan... He's like batman... He's a "Dark Knight" If you will...

  9. Thought technically, David, by using multiple names on Facebook you are breaking the terms of service. What Zuckerberg wants is for you to be David White, and ONLY David White, EVERYWHERE on the internet. Otherwise, in his words, you "lack integrity."

(for the record, I don't think you lack integrity:)

  10. In reference to Prof Markman's comment, referencing Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg comment,"You have one Identity, I will say that Facebook is a key factor in that becoming very true;employeers are now checking Facebook for compromising discressions of current employees as well prospective employees.
